He kneels close to the flame, its glow trembling against stone— a borrowed light in the cold dark of Yerushalayim’s night. Two small figures linger behind, half-hidden, half-waiting— faces turned toward him, toward hope, toward something warm. A faint light pours down from above— perhaps just a street lamp catching the winter air, or perhaps two loving souls watching still, blessing every spark their children keep alive. Perhaps someone is watching. Or perhaps they once did. Is this a moment of nachas, with parents standing just beyond the frame— smiling, watching, letting him lead? Or is this all there is— three children guarding a mitzvah with nothing but courage and a little oil that refuses to go out? We only see what the light reveals. The rest is shadow, left for compassion to fill. So look gently. Judge softly. For every story holds more than we are able to see.
